I met Jesus while a student at Carthage College, a small liberal arts college in Kenosha, WI affiliated with the Lutheran Church (today it’s the ELCA). Despite growing up in a mainline denominational church that was quite liberal in its theology, and despite the similar liberal theology of Carthage’s religion/philosophy department, God met me in a wonderful way and assured me that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are His Word.
This is not to say that I didn’t have some doubts, but through the writings of men like A.W. Tozer and Francis Schaeffer, I worked through the intellectual issues that were a large part of the baggage of my background. While I was wrestling with these issues, God led me (along with my new wife, Mary) to the Graduate School at Columbia Bible College in Columbia, SC (today it’s called Columbia International University). The spiritual and intellectual credibility and honesty that I encountered there affirmed the experiences God had given me that He has revealed Himself to men through the Scriptures.
Before going to seminary I became associated with The Christian & Missionary Alliance because I recognized it as A.W. Tozer’s denomination and his writings had impressed me deeply. I have remained with the Alliance since and rejoice in the spiritual integrity that generally pervades the denomination.
Mary and I have been married now for 31 years and we have three children.
Thanks so much I really appreciate your thoughts. I will be looking forward to more in the future. You apparently spend a lot of time in God’s Word.
